Cold Emulsion Mixes

Cold emulsion mixes are basic aggregate-asphalt emulsion mixes that are classified as a function of their use, composition and storability. Mix designs are required for cold emulsion mixes to determine the grade and percent of emulsion used, as well as the physical properties of workability, stability, strength and moisture susceptibility. Mixes are tailor set for use and climate.

Various economical methods can be used to produce and place cold emulsion mixes. Advances in asphalt emulsion technology make it possible for emulsion mixes to be used in a wide variety of pavement construction, reclamation and maintenance applications.

Features and Benefits:

  • Tailor designed for optimum performance of varying raw materials and climates
  • Control other characteristics such as set time, mix time and strength
  • Environmentally friendly, Emission free
  • Economical, Eliminate need to dry or heat aggregate
  • Safety, Cold emulsions are safer than super heated asphalt cements
  • Option to mix-in-place or plant mix and stockpile
  • Wide choice of processes to meet your paving needs (repair, restoration, base and wearing courses)
  • New construction or rehabilitation
  • Processes to meet secondary or primary road demands
  • Utilization of standard paving equipment (paver or blade laid)
  • Cost effective way to maximize the life of the road

Open Graded Mixes

The aggregate is 0-2% fines < 75~m and the finished product has 15-25% voids. The open grade results in quick drainage, improved skid resistance, as well as reduced hydroplaning and spray. The open grade reduces road noise and makes it an economical alternative to sound barriers, and the increased durability improves rut resistance. Open graded mix is useful for restoration or new construction at varying depths, mixed in place or stockpiled.

Recycled Asphalt Mixes

100% RAP mixes are an economically and environmentally friendly way to improve road conditions. It eliminates a disposal problem and conserves natural resources (asphalt aggregate). Increasing the value of RAP mixes can incorporate existing base and sub-grade materials with proper engineering. RAP mixes can be crushed/graded mixed and laid on-site using engineered rejuvenating emulsions.

Stockpile/Maintenance Mixes

All forms of cold mix can be stockpiled. Mixes are specially formulated to meet the desired life of the stockpile. The uses range from maintenance to base and wearing course paving, and will allow for flexibility around unforeseen delays and varying weather.

Dense Graded Mixes

Continuous graded aggregate with 5-10% fines < 75~m and 5-10% voids. Affordable crushed run aggregates can be utilized. Dense graded mixes are high in strength and durability. Low water impermeability greatly improves freeze/thaw characteristics.
